My guests looked a bit scared as they were ushered down a spiral staircase into a candle lit basement festooned in colour fabrics. I think they wondered what this circus like space had to do with wine tasting. Although the heady wafts of the house smoked duck, gruyere biscuits and honeycomb must have hit them as much as the colours did as they walked in.

This does exactly what New Zealand Pinot Noir should at this price point and is so different from Burgundy. It’s packed with fresh summer fruit flavours and is punchy whilst being overwhelming. Pop it in the fridge or an ice bucket half an hour before you drink it and serve with cold meat buffets or lamb chops.
